Round Zero Season 2 Episode 2 – Pictograms, Instagrams and Snortin Grams: Jon Jones vs Anthony Smith

Mickey Gall vs Diego Sanchez
Dr. Akins: WHY?! Prediction: Gall by submission
Sweet MBA: This is a very good match up. Diego Sanchez style has not changed in almost twenty years. He just goes forward. Gall has shown exceptional jiujitsu and finishes despite having some inferior opponents in CM Punk and Northcutt. His recent move to California to train with Din Thomas and Joe Schilling can only be seen as an attempt to step up his striking. Gall by decision.
Edmen Shahbazyan vs Charles Byrd
Dr. Akins: This fight is simple. If it stays standing, Shahbazyan wins. If it goes to the ground, Byrd wins. However, these are the fights that young fighters tend to lose. Prediction: Byrd by submission
Sweet MBA: Byrd has not be delivering as of late. Given the 8 and 0 record of Shahbazyan, I expect Byrd not to fly. Shahbazyan by KO.
Polyana Viana vs Hannah Cifers
Dr. Akins: Has Viana learned a lesson in her loss to Aldrich? Has Cifers learned a lesson in her loss to Barbers? We will soon find out. Prediction: Viana by submission
Sweet MBA: Shout out to Viana for moving the internets with her ability to beat down her attempted robber, call the police and capture it on video. She certainly earned fans and inspired women to pursue combat sports. If she gets Cifers on the ground and takes her back, she is going to rob her of her consciousness. Viana by submission.
Tecia Torres vs Weili Zhang
Dr. Akins: I still don’t know enough about Zhang to make a call here. Prediction: Torres by decision (due to lack of information on her opponent)
Sweet MBA: Tecia can’t strike. Zhang can’t submit. This fight will be decided in the clinch. Zhang by decision.
Alejandro Perez vs Yadong Song
Dr. Akins: Yet another AKA vs. Alpha Male matchup. Song has been dominant is his 3 fight in the UFC, winning by KO, submission, and unanimous decision. Perez has been on a roll, beating top-tier opponents, like Wineland, Lopez, and Alcantara. As they say, “styles make fights”, and these two are mirror images of each other. Prediction: Perez by decision
Sweet MBA: I want Song to win but I suspect he hasn’t been in the Alpha Male pool long enough to fix his defense problems as well as develop new offenses beyond his jab and looping hook. Perez by decision.
Frankie Saenz vs Marlon Vera
Dr. Akins: I certainly hope this is Saenz’s swan song. Prediction: Vera by KO
Sweet MBA: Fireworks upon fireworks. Vera by submission.
Cody Garbrandt vs Pedro Munhoz
Dr. Akins: Let’s face it. As long as Dillashaw is the bantumweight champion, Garbrandt will NEVER sniff a title shot again. So, the only thing he can do is hope to beat top 10 competitors and wait it out. Munhoz is trying to fulfill the potential UFC matchmakers saw in him as the RFA champion. This is a big fight for Munhoz, a convincing win against Garbrandt, puts him in the conversation as next man up. This is an intriguing matchup. Let’s see what happens. Prediction: Munhoz by decision
Sweet MBA: Normally I might say Garbrandt is over hyped and under trained. However the alliance of Alpha Male wrestling with CSA Pleasanton striking might be the best marriage in northern california mma since Javier Mendes decided to recruit grapplers and teach them kickboxing at AKA. Garbrandt’s movement against The Eddie Show has been impressive. If Cody controls range the way we saw his team mate Fili do last week, it will be Garbrandt by KO.
Misha Cirkunov vs Johnny Walker
Dr. Akins: Along with Davis Bertans and Kristaps Porzingis, Cirkunov is the latest installment of great athletes to come out of the small country of Latvia. The ground game is Cirkunov’s strong point, but so far he has been HIGHLY susceptible to being knocked out. Walker happens to be a KO artist. But I am concerned about Walker taking another fight one month after his last. Let’s see how this turns out. Prediction: Walker by KO
Sweet MBA: Walker by second round KO.
Macy Chiasson vs Gina Mazany
Dr. Akins: There’s not enough information on either fight to give an educated opinion on this fight. I’m going to separate them by quality of past opponents. Prediction: Mazany by decision
Sweet MBA: Mazany by lay and pray. Shout out to GSP. Now if only your style would retire from women’s mma.
Holly Holm vs Aspen Ladd
Dr. Akins: I love Ladd’s game. But facing a combat sport veteran like Holm on this big a stage, may be too much too soon. On the other hand, if Ladd pulls off the upset, we could be looking at the next women’s MMA superstar. Prediction: Holm by decision
Sweet MBA: Yikes! New Holm post divorce with a full camp and team full of picograms to back her. Aspen Ladd on the tear. If Holm keeps it standing, it goes to her. If Ladd gets it to the ground, Holm is going to fill the octagon with blood. Holm by decision.
Jeremy Stephens vs Zabit Magomedsharipov
Dr. Akins: Here’s to hoping Stephens doesn’t die! ‍♂️ Prediction: Magomedsharipov by KO
Sweet MBA: You have to respect Stephens. His come backs are the things of mma mental toughness dreams. However, I am a wushu, san shou, and wrestling guy. As I have said before, when asked what martial art do you do, I reply “Have you ever seen Zabit?” Zabit by rear naked choke.
Robbie Lawler vs Ben Askren
Dr. Akins: Here’s Askren’s opportunity to prove to me that he belongs at this level. Prediction: Lawler by KO
Sweet MBA: We have been waiting for this one. Askren by submission. The question is when.
Tyron Woodley vs Kamaru Usman
Dr. Akins: I simply do not believe Usman’s striking is good enough to beat Woodley. Prediction: Woodley by decision
Sweet MBA: Strange them going on in UFC. Since the sale to WME, we have seen a trend of feeding the old to the new. The 2019 season kicked off with the trend of elder statesmen fighting updated versions of themself. Anderson versus Israel’s round one may be one of the best mma fights of all time. Usman is an updated version of Woodley. This revives an older rivalry of ATT and the defunct Blackzillians which is now Combat Club. The strength is in Usman’s favor but experience and speed will give Woodley the win. Woodley by decision.
Jon Jones vs Anthony Smith
Dr. Akins: I abstain from picking due to the fact that I am unable to remain unbiased.
Sweet MBA: I would love to tell you Smith’s power will finish Jones. Sadly Jones is lord of range and god of cheating. Jones by spinning elbow KO.
